Enh. I gave this book a 2 out of 5 stars. I'm so disappointed because I thought I would love this book so much. It sounded like the perfect book for me and has gotten great reviews. The beginning was good but I skim-read the last pages. I know this is an unpopular opinion. Just because I didn't enjoy it does not mean that you will not. Here is my list of pros and cons:
Spoilers!
This section contains spoilers... Do not read them if you have not read the book:
Pros:
Alice
Time travel
Sailing scenes
Sailing scenes
Cons:
Nicholas's mood swings
No character back stories
Confusing plot and explanations (the world-building had a lot of loose ends).
Instalove at the very beginning
Slow plot
No connection to any characters (for me to really enjoy a book I have to feel for the characters. The only character I liked was Alice and she died in the first few pages).
The whole time-traveling aspect was not explained enough for me. How is Nicholas alive if he is supposed to be dead by now? He's nineteen from the 1700s and he's still alive? Going into this, I thought that the main character was living in the present and was one of the few time-travelers in her generation. I thought that she she went in time, she would just see past versions of people who are already dead. I found this very confusing, so if you have an explanation, please tell me.
