As I made clear with my previous post, Korean culture really interests me, so I decided that it was time to put my cooking skills to work and try to cook popular street food, tteokbokki or spicy rice cakes.
Now, I have never eaten this food before, so I had no base to compare the taste to and I realize that I probably did not even make it accurately (for one thing, it is missing fish cakes). One thing I noticed was that tteokbokki is SPICY (and a little sweet). I had a stomach ache when I made it and this just made it worse; be warned. Even though my stomach was wonky, this tasted delicious and had a very interesting flavor. The tteok (rice cakes) were chewy and kind of reminded me of gnocchi with a less soft texture.
One thing I would do if I were to cook this again would be to lessen the amount of sauce and maybe add scallions for freshness; then it would be perfect. Tteokbokki seems like it would be the perfect winter-time, cozy food. I am really pleased with this experience, especially because I was able to try flavors completely new to me and make it myself. This made me even more eager to go to Korea and try everything there is to try there. You will know if I do.
Until next time,
Liza
